I love rouladen but haven’t made it in a long time. I don’t know why I waited so long as it is not difficult to make. I don’t measure anything for this, but I will give a list of ingredients and provide photos to give you an idea what it should look like.
beef- inside round, sliced thinly
mustard
bacon
pickles, sliced (I like garlic ones)
onions, sliced thinly
salt and pepper
paprika
beef broth (I use a 900 ml box as I want lots of gravy)
flour
water
oil
Lay out your slices of beef. If they are really big, cut them in half (to about 6-8″ long). Slather a layer of mustard over the beef. Add a sprinkling of salt, pepper and paprika.
Cover each slice with 1-2 strips of bacon. Add some sliced onion and a slice of pickle at one end.
Roll it up and secure with a couple toothpicks.
Heat a couple tablespoons of oil in a dutch oven. Add the rolls to brown them on all sides.
Pour the beef broth in with the meat. Cover, and bake at 350 degrees F for about 2 hours. Remove the beef from the pot, but bring the remaining liquid to a boil. Add some water to 2-3 Tablespoons of flour until it pours easily. Slowly add this to your hot broth, stirring as you go. It will thicken the broth to make gravy. Pour the gravy over the rouladen, and voila!
