I have always enjoyed watching Dame Maggie Smith’s work as an actress, but my favourite of the characters she has inhabited is undoubtedly Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess, in the series Downton Abbey. When I need a chuckle, I like to watch compilations of her pithy comments on YouTube. If you have not seen the show, you may not find them as amusing, but I love to reminisce with them.
