6 cups of bread, cubed
6 eggs
2 cups milk
1/2 brown sugar
2 Tbsp. rum
1 Tbsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
Place the cubed bread in a greased casserole. Combine the rest of the above ingredients and pour over the bread. Let it soak for at least 15 minutes, while you prepare the topping.
Topping:
2 apples, sliced
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 Tbsp. butter
Melt the butter in a frying pan. Add the apple slices and cook until they begin to soften, turning as needed. Add the maple syrup and let it simmer to thicken a bit. Spoon the apples and sauce over the top of the bread mixture. Bake in a oven preheated to 350 degrees F. Bake 55-60 minutes until the custardy part is cooked through. It is best served warm with a little milk or cream poured over the top. (We even like it for breakfast…shh.)
