This is a delicious family recipe for meatballs, in the Swedish style. My husband grew up eating these, and after my initial skepticism about the choice of spices, I quickly became a convert. We love them.
Gram’s Meatballs
1-2 Tbsp. butter
2 medium onions, chopped
2 lbs. ground beef
1 lb. ground pork
2 beaten eggs
1 cup fine bread crumbs
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. brown sugar
½ tsp. black pepper
½ tsp. allspice
½ tsp. nutmeg
¼ tsp. cloves
Combine spices and set aside. Melt the butter in a fry pan. Cook onions until golden. When ready to remove from heat, add spices and stir until well combined with onions. Combine everything with the meat and form into 1½ inch balls. Fry until cooked through. Serve with beef gravy, or the mushroom gravy below. My photos show the beef gravy version.
Meatball Gravy
1/2 onion, minced
1 cup of mushrooms, diced
250 ml beef broth
3/4 cup of sour cream
pepper to taste
2 drops Worcestershire sauce
Brown onion in olive oil. Add the mushrooms to cook and then add the broth, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Remove from heat and add the sour cream. Add meatballs.
Yum! I used to make meatballs quite often but haven’t lately. I’ll have to try these and the gravy (with sour cream!). The spices are a similar to those in your hand pie recipe that my daughter likes 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!
