Summer Reads

booksI read these three books on a recent holiday and think they would be great on a summer reading list. They are hopeful and basically light reading.

Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson is a novel about a retired and “proper Englishman”, Major Ernest Pettigrew and his budding relationship with Mrs. Jasmina Ali. They have both lost their spouses and have a shared interest in literature, but culture and tradition buck up against them from both of their inner circles.

The Rosie Project, by Graeme Simsion is the story of a bright scientist who is socially challenged. He creates “The Wife Project” – a 16 page questionnaire for prospective girlfriends to weed out the unsuitable ones. Concurrently, he helps a student on her quest to find her biological father and “The Rosie Project” is born. Love and the scientific method bump elbows.

Joy for Beginners, by Erica Bauermeister is the story of six friends who each agree to complete a challenge (not of her choosing) over the next year. A story of growth, healing and female friendship.
