January – National Hobby Month

“It is in his pleasures that a man really lives; it is from his leisure that he constructs the true fabric of self.” – Agnes Repplier

I enjoy noting some of the “national holidays” that are meant to promote certain ideas, foods, or niche passions, giving us license to celebrate some of our favourite things. You know the ones – National Pizza Day, National Dog Appreciation Month and so on. January has been blessed to include National Soup Month, Hot Tea Month, and includes such treasures as Fruitcake Toss Day and National Hot Chocolate Day (Jan 31st if you wish to partake). Another January “holiday” is National Hobby Month, which is a great pairing for January given some of us are indoors more often and looking for something to do. Hobbies engage the mind and temporarily displace the “to do” routines of everyday living, adding colour and richness to our lives.

If you have been following me for a while, you will have already sussed out some of my hobbies. Houseplants, gardening, reading, baking, walking, puzzles, journal keeping and its associated stationery are among my favourites. I bought an embroidery sampler to pick up the hobby again after some years away. Gardening is my top pick, but alas, gardening is largely limited to planning our gardens and indoor plants during January in Calgary .

Below is a photo collage of the hobbies I will enjoy this January, and some I fondly remember from the outdoor growing season. What are some of yours?

  1. Garden in Airdrie in the summer, garden in Arizona in the winter… though the winter garden is a lot easier because I simply hire a crew to come in and blitz the place for half a day and I hire a company to come in and fertilize as needed! At both places we have a woodwork shop and a craft room to do paint pour, sewing and anything else I feel like doing!
