As someone who loves stationery, taking an afternoon or two to write out Christmas cards is one of my small pleasures. I send far fewer than I used to, with the passing of elder family members and friends, and the replacement of some paper cards with digital versions as email addresses change less frequently than some home addresses. I still love the tactile pleasure of an embossed card, the beauty of an idyllic winter scene or the rich colours found in images of the past. I love the bronzes, golds and silvers in art and ink that are otherwise scarcely seen in daily life.
While people have become busier and more distracted, it is still nice to send or receive a personal greeting on a lovely card indicating that yes, I am thinking of you and want to keep in contact whether I saw you just last week or not since last year. I feel a little bubble of happiness when I poke the addressed envelopes through the mail slot, and an equal one when I find a card among the advertisements in our box.
